schmendrick, uncertain about that
Yesterday, [info]druidevo dropped by to start pricing the garage sale items, which is probably the most awful and monumental phase of the operation. This is so because it entails diving into the piles of Stuff of Varying Scariness and trying to classify it, even before you make deluded attempts to assign value to it. It is worth noting that possibly unlike most garage sales, the Gaia garage sale will have a separate table for "Things of Geek Interest" (computer and PDA whizbang, geek toys, etc) as well as an Adults Only table (porn and knives).

Interesting things we found yesterday, and what we did with them:
  • A Daffy Duck zip-up keychain that was apparently used in some sort of kiddie smuggling operation, as it was full of little rhinestone rings in various colors. We separated duck from booty and priced them individually.
  • A small box full of doll feet. Not doll shoes, doll feet. Labeled "Freakish doll parts" and priced at $1.00.
  • An ambigram coaster which proclaimed "The wages of sin is DEATH" from one angle, and "The gift of God is eternal LIFE" from the other. Marked 25 cents and placed with some trepidation with home decor.
  • A U.S. Congress ashtray. Snickered at profusely.

And there's still stuff coming. I'm excited to see what sort of awful things the rest of you guys have. (Note: In all fairness, a number of awful things came out of EHQ. Some of them are rock operas.)

In other news, I'm ambivalent about seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I'd initially thought that this was going to be an "opening weekend or DOOM" sort of film, but somewhere in the midst of the really bad trailers, I lost enthusiasm. Yesterday, I had a brief relapse of anticipation, and decided I did want to see it relatively soon after all. I mean, this is the sort of thing that, on paper, I ought to be knocking over old ladies with walkers to see. I love the story, I loved the Gene Wilder flick, I love Tim Burton (and I'm not embarrassed about that, even after Planet of the Apes), I love Johnny Depp (I'm not embarrassed about that, either). But it just looks.... crappy. I don't know. I guess I want to be disappointed about it as soon as possible so that I can get on with my life.

Anyway, I've just discovered that the Olathe 30 is showing it in IMAX. Now that, I can get excited about, regardless of anticipated crappiness level of the film. I mean, mildly disturbing dancing midgets are good, but GIGANTIC mildly disturbing dancing midgets are, well, no longer only mildly disturbing.

Is it legal to sell knives without some kind of special permit?

I think so -- they're mostly of the kitchen persuasion, and anything else would be small.

Oh, shit. That's where Daffy went. Please set it aside so I can buy it back. She's asked me about it about fifty times this week. Keep the booty.

The doll feet are for Bratz dolls. When you get to the rest of the Bratz crap, it can go in that. I would have kept them together, but they weren't found or bagged at the same time or in the same place. She subscribes to the "little bags of shit squirrelled into every the nook and cranny" method of storage. Takes after her father in that respect, I might add.

Will do. You just want the daffy?

Also, I take this to mean we can expect to find more random parts of doll in later boxes??

Just the Daffy. Please. [info]twixxa gave it to her, and I had no clue it was so terribly precious. The rings were just cheap party favors from the LOTR rings birthday party.

Bratz dolls, for the uninitiated, make Barbies look sensible, in terms of human anatomy. Not of the least of the reasons for this is that they don't come with shoes. They come with differently shod feet that screw off at the ankle and can be used interchangeably. We especially liked putting the girl feet on the boy dolls.

And not only will you uncover more of these mutants, but their house is still in the pile down in the basement.

Something tells me this will be an entertaining garage sale just for the items there and their labels.

As for the chocolate factory, I'm going to see it purely for cultural value (Burton + Depp + remake of a classic), probably tonight or tomorrow, but I'm not terribly excited about it. I wasn't all that excited about the original either, though Gene Wilder was of course great there.

Part of the problem for the new movie is that in the trailers Depp looks way too much like Michael Jackson. Adds to the general freakiness, I suppose.

Somebody on the radio here in KC was making the Wonka/Jackson comparison, and was refuted by another dj saying, "They look the same, but the thing is, Willy Wonka doesn't like children..."

And see, I hadn't until then associated the Depp Wonka with Michael Jackson -- I sort of thought he looked like Oscar Wilde.

Wonka
Maybe I'm not familiar enough with Wilde. But the huge wraparound sunglasses have to be more Jackson than Wilde.

The movie, however, was surprisingly wonderful. And I'd somehow overlooked before that, being a Tim Burton movie, Danny Elfman would be doing the music. Major bonus points.

Re: Wonka
Sure- also worth noting, the impression was formed before seeing the sunglasses. After that, it was modified to "Well, he's a very, er, mod Oscar Wilde, then".

I was disappointed in the film, actually. It started off very well, and some of the interior bits were quite good (I especially liked Wonka in Loompaland and the whole Wonkavision scene), but overall it made me sad. What need for new theme? What need for scary dad? What need for Willy Wonka to bumble and be generally incompetent and twitchy? :(

Goth in the Box?
Is this an actual store? Do they sell goths in boxes? Do you adopt them, like the old cabbage patch kids? Do they come in anything other than boxes, such as jars or maybe a thermos to keep 'em warm? Wow. The very concept. What's the return policy? If you get a goth home and it's not broody enough or too mopey can you take it back and exchange it? Or do you have to try it out in the store before you take it home? Wow. Just, wow.

Yeah, but putting her in a box when her mouth gets to be too much is very, um, tempting.

I totally want to go green again. Not until the current coat of red starts to fade off though.

Yeah, the sale is next weekend. Somebody is home during the day pretty much any day (except tomorrow). We will be glad to facilitate the rehoming of your stuff.

I know that there is a 7:00 show today, tomorrow and Sunday. That's the latest show -- I knew I couldn't make it to any of the earlier ones, so didn't remember them. You can get them from movietickets.com, though.
